Swahili (Kiswahili) is the native language for five million people in some parts of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, and from 2004 it became a working language in African Union. Total number of Swahili speakers is equal to 30-50 million people. Presently Swahili is also spread throughout considerable territories of Zaire, in certain areas of Mozambique, Somali and Burundi, as well as on Madagascar island.
Swahili is a language of Bantoid branch (Niger-Kongo macrofamily of African languages). Swahili language appeared in the XII - XIII centuries as a conglomeration of town dialects which emerged after creolisation of local Bantu accents under the influence of Arabic language. Up until the XIX century, the area of Swahili popularity was limited by Eastern Africa, and the word “Swahili” itself runs back to the Arabic “coast”.

Lexis of Swahili language is rich of sayings from Arab (up to 40% in certain text), Persian, Portuguese and German languages. It should be noted about a reverse process: for example, the following words came to us from Swahili:

  • “safari” – “trip”
  • “simba” (name of the hero of the famous Disney’s cartoon) - lion
  • “pumba” - lazy
  • “rafiki” - friend.
