Tajik language is national and state language of Tajikistan. A part of the population of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Afghan Tajiks and certain Tajik-speaking ethnic groups of China also speak Tajik and its dialects.

Tajik language refers to the languages of Persian subgroup (Iranian group of Indo-European language family). Other names of Tajik language formed on the basis of Farsi language and certain medieval Eastern-Iranian languages: Farsi-ji Dari, Farsi or Dari. Tajik is the closest relative of modern Persian language (Iran) and Dari language (Afghanistan).
Presently, there are more than 50 Tajik dialects. They are traditionally divided into four groups:

  • northern
  • southern
  • south-eastern (Darwaz)
  • central (upper-Zeravshan).

In addition, the basis of literary Tajik language included the dialects of northern group, particularly accents of Bukhara and Samarkand.

Did you know that…

  • Official languages of Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan are mutually understood in full. Moreover, presently, their coming closer together occurs because of “iranization” of Dari and Tajik language.
  • Dialects of southern Tajiks are much closer to the dialects of northern Afghanistan or to the same of northern Tajikistan.
  • Basic religion of Tajik people’s ancestors was Zoroastrianism, which canons are set forth in the holy book of Avesta (II-I millennia B.C.).
  • Modern Tajiks are the descendants of habitants of Baktria and Sogdiana, who were ones of the first founders of human civilization.
During the dinner Tajiks prefer to seat on low-level sittings called “sufa”, placed around low tables. European kitchen furniture is considered to be unacceptable.
