Malay language (Bahasa Melayu) is the state language of Malaysia; it falls into the Indonesian group of the Austronesian languages. Except Malaysia it is also disseminated in some regions of Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, in Singapore and Brunei. The total number of Malay language speakers exceeds 20 mln. people.
Ancient Malay language existed on Sumatra and Bangka islands in the VII - X centuries A.D. and came down to our own period only in the kind of literary masterpieces – stone inscriptions accomplished by the means of South Indian syllable-type writing. In due course Malay language has been not only the language of trade and everyday communication, but also the literary language of Malay Archipelago, the language of Christianity and Islam ingraining here. The classic Malay language and literature (on the ground of Arabic graphics used at that time) emerges in the XV - XIX century.

There are many dialectic forms of Malay language; as an example we can mention everyday, so-called “low”, Malay and Jakartian dialect. The modern Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) differing from literary Malay (Malaysian) with terminology and some peculiarities of phonetics, morphology, and syntax has emerged as a result of synthesis of low and high Malay language variants.
