Laotian language (phaasaa laao) is the official language and language of international communication of the Lao Republic that belongs to Thai-Kadai languages. The nearest relation of Laotian is Thai language. Total number of Laotian language speakers (in Laos and Thailand) falls in the range of 3.5-24 million people.
In the XIX century Laos was colonized by France and remained a colonial state up to 1954; quite predictably it had led to degeneration of Laotian language that gradually has become nothing but everyday language and has given up a predominant role to French, declared to be official in 1947. No sooner than in 1956 Laotian regained positions and was granted the status of official Laos’s language.

Normative Laotian language was formed on the basis of Vientiane dialect. There are several basic dialects and talks in Laos that in their turn are divided into several dozens of subdialects distinguished between each other with phonetics and lexicon, as a rule. The sharpest divergences are pointed out between dialect groups of Northern and Southern Laos. Laotian language is tonal, it has six strains; for majority of people it will be extremely difficult to distinguish strains, but any attempt to say merely several words will help You to get on the right side of people.
