German (Deutsch) is one of the outstanding members of the Germanic group of languages in the Family of Indo-European languages. It’s the closest connection with deemed Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and of course English languages. For the number of native speakers, the modern German language is on the 2nd place after English language, for spreading in the world – is on the 10th place, on the Internet – the 5th one. More than 100 million residents of Europe consider it a native language. This is not only citizens of Germany, but German speaking residents of Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, North Italy (Sudtirol), Denmark (Nordschleswig) and regions of Belgium and Luxemburg adjoining Germany. German is a state language of Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein and Switzerland. Moreover, while for Germany, Austria and Lichtenstein, German language is a one state language, German language in Switzerland is widely regarded the most major state language of four existing as for number of German speaking people.

At the present time 8 regional dialects of German language are distinguished, in the result of that there are many situations when even Berliner arrived in Bavaria is misunderstood by its residents, needless to say of a foreigner. Such territorial differentiation is peculiar not only for verbal communication but also for belles-lettres. In such cases, the standard variant of German language comes to the aid so-called "Hochdeutsch" (the equivalent "Queen's English" – a sample English language used in mass media, literature, education and business). The majority of the Germans from childhood up know both the dialect of their locality, and Hochdeutsch. Such situation is peculiar for Austrian and Swiss variants of German language.

The following characteristic features of German language can be noted:

  • Use of additional letters not available in Latin alphabet. Their share in writing has been significantly obscured after the spelling reform in 1998.
  • Nouns in German language are written with capital letters (for instance die Stadt).
  • People who face German language for the first time are surprised with existence of long compound nouns equal by volume to whole sentences and even paragraphs, and include several definitions simultaneously. For example, the word “das Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenubertragungsgesetz” consisting of 63 letters and means in translation “Act on transfer of duties for beef marking control".
