The Balkar language (malkiar til) is also called the Karachay language (karachai til) or the Karachay-Balkar language – the language of Karachays (citizens of the Karachayevo-Circassian Republic) and Balkarians (citizens of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic). The Balkar language is one of the Turkic languages of the Kypchak-Polovets language subgroup. Its kindred languages are: Tatar, Bashkir, partially Kyrgyz and Kazakh. The Balkar language is native for more than 300 thousand of people.

There are two dialects of the Balkar language: Karachay-Baksan-Chegem (“ch” dialect), laid as a base of the standard Balkar language, and Malkar (“ts”-dialect). The dictionary of the Balkar language is characterized by the main Turkic lexical layer and borrowings from Arabic, Persian, Ossetian, Russian and Kabardian. The bilingualism is a very spread phenomenon in Karachayevo-Circassia and Kabardino-Balkaria: Russian and Balkar have a status of official languages in both Republics.

• For Balkarians their guest (konak) was always an important person, he/she was allotted a special room (konak yui), where there were all the things needed.
• The Balkarians had a superstition, if to nourish a child with a tongue it will grow up talkative. Also it was forbidden to nourish children with kidneys; they believed that kidneys slow down the child’s growth. And it was believed that a girl who tasted chicken ventricles would have blue lips.
• There are more than 100 sources of mineral water of different types at the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria.
• The second wife in the Karachay family had to do all the hard housework and had less authority in comparison with the first one. The Karachay proverb says: “Къатын юсюне баргъандан эсе, тыбырда къалгъан игиди” that means “instead of being the second wife it is better not to get married at all”.
