The Bulgarian language is an official language of Bulgaria. As well as Czech, Polish and Serbo-Croatian languages, it belongs to the Slavic branch of Indo-European languages. The most part of the population speaking Bulgarian lives in Bulgaria, and today the total amount of native speakers of Bulgarian is ten million people.

Primordial Slavic writings are considered manuscripts of IX-X centuries kept in the Bulgarian place Preslav, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and created with the use of Cyrillic font.

Alphabet of Cyril and Methodius (Cyrillic alphabet) is a modification of the Greek alphabet: in Cyrillic writings Greek symbols and letters are used, adopted for definite national alphabets.

The Cyrillic alphabet is used by Russians, Bulgarians, Serbians and Ukrainians. Close connection with the Greek-, Turkic- and Roman speaking neighbors led to destruction of system of cases and complete loss of mood. The Bulgarian language gained features of the analytical language, for example, case relations are expressed with a help of prepositions just like in English.

Going on a trip across Bulgaria all Russian speaking tourists should use a phrase-book because phonetic and morphological similarity of Bulgarian and Russian sometimes can   mislead the tourist who does not know the Bulgarian language. For example: the word “гора” (mountain)  is translated into Russian as “лес”(forest), “живот”(stomach) means “жизнь”(life), “булка”(bun) – “невеста”(bride), “дыня”(melon) – “арбуз”(watermelon).

• The Bulgarians consider that Saint Cyril and Methodius are almost their nationals, in spite of the fact that they were Greek and descended from Thessaloniki city. As a basis for their alphabet Cyril and Methodius took the dialect of the Bulgarians who lived in this region so called the Old Bulgarian Language, that later became Old Church Slavonic.
• Representatives of the primordial population of Bulgaria were called Thracians. For example the Thracian was a fabulous Spartacus, who was the leader of servile revolt in 73-71 B.C.
•  The modern Bulgarian language appeared in XVIII-XIX centuries mainly on the basis of accents and dialects of mountain population of Bulgaria. 
• Slavic customs of hospitable welcome and farewell ceremonies are popular among the Bulgarians. In the process of welcoming of guests the Bulgarians bring in bread with salt, thyme and red wine. One shall snap off a piece of bread sop into salt and thyme and drink wine. In the process of  farewell the Bulgarians give to the person a spotted crane's bill as a symbol of health (Bulgarian name of the flower is zdravets)
