The Armenian language is a state language of the Republic of Armenia. The number of native speakers, by force of historical reasons living all over the world, at a rough estimate is 6 to 10 million. The most of them live in the historical homeland, Armenia; other representatives of the Armenian Diaspora can be met in countries of Central Asia and in different European States (Germany, Spain, Czech Republic etc.). About 100,000 of ethnic Armenians for whom the Armenian language is native, live in the United States.

According to its origin the Armenian language is the Indo-European language, i.e. appeared from the general source with Slavic, Baltic, German, Celtic, Roman, Indo-Iranian languages and also Albanian and Greek. The unique Armenian alphabet, consisting of 38 letters, was created almost 16 centuries ago by the Armenian missionary Mesrop Mashtots, who laid the foundation of the Armenian written language. The Armenian literature of 1000 A.D. based on ancient Armenian language – grabar. One of the first significant sites of the Armenian written language was a translation of the Bible into the Ancient Armenian language. Later the so called Middle Armenian language appeared, and in the beginning of XIX century a generally used New Armenian language developed – ashkharabar. The modern Armenian language is represented by two variants: eastern (it is spoken in Armenia and Iran) and western, more peculiar for representatives of the Armenian Diaspora living in Europe and in the USA.
