Japanese languageis the official language of Japan. More than 130 million persons living in the country speak and write in Japanese language, a country that consists of three thousand islands. Because of some island isolation Japan has 20-30 dialects. Dialects’ variants differ, mostly, lexically, morphologically, variability of the use of particles, and sometimes pronunciation. Among widespread dialects it is possible to allocate: Kansaj-ben, Tohoku-ben and Kanto-ben (a dialect of Tokyo and vicinities).

The Japanese and Chinese languages are similar only hieroglyphically in origin, the grammatically and lexically they differ very strongly. Before occurrence of the unique Japanese syllabic alphabet (kana) the Japanese used the Chinese alphabet, which clashed with their phonetics and complicated interpretation of written texts. With “kana” it was possible to display lexemes, some Japanese verbs and grammatical particles which was impossible to do with the Chinese hieroglyphs.

Just like the European languages, Japanese language has a whole system of functional styles: distinguishing standard and colloquial Japanese language, popular speech and slang, and the gradation on politeness level is also developed. The Japanese language has an extraordinary rich system of personal pronouns, about 50 forms of references, approximately the same amount of greetings, almost ten forms of expressions of gratitude and more than 20 apologies. A Japanese person of any age should realize accurately his/her place in the system of social mutual relations; otherwise he won’t be able to express his thoughts correctly. The Japanese language has a strict differentiation between speech of men and women, absent in English, German and other European languages.
