Tatar language is one of the Turkic languages relating to Altaic language family. In the beginning of the 1990-s years Tatar language was declared as the state language of the Republic of Tatarstan, in line with Russian language. Number of ethnic Tatars in the territory of the Russian Federation reaches 7 million, and about two million of them live in Tatarstan. Tatar is also spoken by a part of the population of Bashkiria, Chuvashia, the Komi Republic and Mordovia, as well as of Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. Historically, “Tatars” is the self-designation of a Mongolian tribe representatives of which, spoke Mongolian language and were mentioned by Chinese chroniclers as northern nomadic neighbours.

Three dialects can be identified in Tatar language – Mishar, Kazan-Tatar and Siberian-Tatar, which were formed in separate ethnic groups in dependence on the area of displacement of Tatar-speakers. The first two dialect variants gave the origin of literary Tatar language. Arabic graphics became the basis of Tatar script which occurred in the XIII century. After 1928 it was the Latin alphabet, and since 1939 and till present time Cyrillic alphabet is the basis of written Tatar language.
Tatar language, in line with Bashkir, Kazakh, Turkish, refers to agglutinative languages that means: root is usually identical to the word, and all modifications are expressed by a set of suffixes, the latter of which plays the role of inflexion. Compare for example with the languages of inflectional type (Russian or English).
Example:

  • kitap (Tatar) - book
  • kitaplar (Tatar) - books
  • kitaplarda (Tatar) - in books
  • kitaplarymda (Tatar) – in my books
  • kitabym (Tatar) – my books

Modern Tatar language enters proactively the information space. Permanent growth of the number of sites with Tatar ethnic component, which is presently equal to several hundreds, evidently shows the progressing interest to Tatar language and culture.
