Korean language is the state and official language in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea, and the Northern-Eastern province of China Jilin. About 80 million people residing in the North and South Korea, China, Russia, and Japan speak Korean language.
The writing hangul is used in the DPRK; hangul and hancha, mixed Chinese-Korean graphics, are used in the Republic of Korea. There is a frequently encountered misbelief that Korean language is, most probably, cognate to Chinese and Japanese. In fact, the Korean language etymology is far more complicated. Japanese and Korean languages are really cognate to each other, but the situation with the Chinese language looks differently. Notwithstanding that Korean language was influenced by Chinese for a long time, and there is a great amount of Chinese borrowings in it, historical roots of these two languages are widely different. Strangely enough, but Korean language is in remote relationship with Hungarian and Finnish, but not with Chinese.
40 phonemes can be differentiated in literary Korean language; 21 of them are vowels: 10 monophthongs and 11 diphthongs. Korean is agglutinative language with noteworthily advanced in these latter days tendency to flexibility increase. Due to peculiar word order in the Korean sentence (meaning of a phrase cannot be understood, until the whole phrase is pronounced), oral translation from Korean language is considered to be very difficult. High-paid interpreters from Korean must manage to translate a phrase delivered a moment ago, meanwhile remembering beginning of the following one.
Do You know that …
