The Dutch language (Nederlandse taal) belongs to the Western-German group of Indo-European family. Though the Dutch language is an independent language from XVI century A.D. (from the moment of creation of Dutch nationality) some linguists mistakenly consider it to be one of the German dialects. Within the next six centuries the Dutch language existed in the form of the Old Dutch variant. It was in the process of formation in this period of time and was similar to kindred languages used by the north German tribes. The next stage of the Dutch language development is called Middle Dutch language which existed for about 300 hundred years and than became a basis for genesis of the modern Dutch language.
The number of native speakers of the Dutch language is about 14 million Netherlanders, about 6 million of citizens of Belgium (to be more precise its part called Flanders) and north western part of France, where Flemish variant of Dutch is used. The dialect of the Dutch language Afrikaans is spoken by more than 7 million of people on the African continent, having South African Dutch origin. The Dutch language has a status of the official language in 5 states.
The Dutch language (Nederlandse taal) is close to German lexical system and phonetic structure of the German language in common. The level of identity between Dutch and German is similar as Russian and Belorussian. This is precisely why the Russians who had studied German (but not English) easily learn the Dutch language. In the modern Dutch language also can be found many elements of witnesses concerning identity with French, English, Dutch and Swedish.
Do you know that…
- Native speakers of Spanish or Arabic easily pronounce the Dutch throat sound'г' than native speakers of English or Japanese. But the most difficult sounds of the Dutch language for newcomers are diphthongs uu, ui, eu.
- The first document in the Dutch language was found in 1240 in the neighborhood of Ghent (modern Belgium).
- There are Creole dialects in Indonesia, the characteristic feature of which is availability of the Dutch language elements.
- Dutch children are born mainly in their own homes and not in specialized clinics. Right after the birth of the child the proud father sets up a wooden stork with a baby in the garden near the house.
